STANDING UP FOR PRISONERS RIGHTS

Taking away liberty and holding people in prison is right and proper for those who commit serious crimes and are a danger to society. But even prisoners deserve to be treated with respect and in accordance with the Law.
 
In a recent landmark case, Jackson & Canter have established that Prison Governors must act properly when they decide in what category a prisoner should be held. The category is important as it may determine a prisoner’s rights whilst in prison and indeed in what sort of prison they are held.
 
Congratulations to Lyn Alanbari a solicitor in Jackson & Canter’s prisoner’s rights team for pushing this case to court. Says Lyn ‘It is important that the law is obeyed even by those taking decisions in relation to those held in prison. This case has established new principles which will make sure better decisions are taken in future by prison governors.’
 
Jackson & Canter makes no apology for protecting the rights of citizens whoever they are and whatever they have suffered at the hands of authority.   In this particular case the Judge decided that the decision taken by the Governor was so factually inaccurate that it was ‘ridiculous’
