The much criticised changes to the application fees for Probate have been withdrawn ahead of the general election in June.
Probate fees were due to rise from £155 or £215 (depending on whether the application of probate was made through a solicitor) up to £20,000 if your estate was worth more than £2m. The controversial changes were widely questioned; it seemed to be a newly imposed tax, not a rise in probate fees.
The official Government reason is that there is insufficient time to pass the required legislation before the general election but it is doubtful whether the proposals will be re-introduced. It may be included in the Tory Manifesto, we will need to wait and see.
